The inclination of a few products to use a particular successful product to launch them is what the concept of cluster products is. Their development around this main product is a phenomena observed in the marketing field over the years. It is interesting to note how this materialistic approach by the last few generations has been encouraging such cluster products to evolve in a steady state for these many years.

For example, one of the earliest ideas that brightened up mankind was the idea to cover their bodies with clothes. At first it was nothing but twigs and leaves, which later evolved in to animal skins. Further intellectual evolution of humans brought with it, the ancestors of the modern woolen and cotton fabrics. In those days, washing a cloth was an activity that demanded minimal fuss. But along the way, someone had an idea to make a device that would automate the washing of these clothes and came up with the washing machine. Now it is a multimillion dollar market with its own brood of cluster products such as detergents and color retainers.

Another one of those examples is the number of cluster products coming hand in hand with the modern day automobile. The earliest of automobiles, the steam engine required just coal and a fire. It needed no special products or any sort of pampering. But these days, the advanced automobiles seemingly throw a tantrum for a lot of cluster products: special automobile oils for their engines, windshield covers for the windows and seat covers for the seats. The audio systems and perfumes specially made for cars have their own markets which are ever growing. Even the seemingly insignificant steering wheel has products meant to spoil it.

Based on this observation, it would not be wrong to conclude that materialism is making mankind deviate from its set course of intellectual evolution. What was once designed to make things easier has now ended up making things a lot more difficult for the consumer.
