If you think the Mayans were so much wiser than the rest of civilization, so much so that they were able to predict the end of the world I think you are forgetting one important point. A civilization so advanced that they had the power of seeing into the future would surely have been able to prevent their own collapse. So much for the Mayans having a Magic 8 Ball.
