omg I saw the same thing on the history channel a while ago and was so scard it was tearing me apart, I didnt really want to tell anyone becuz I didnt want to hear the same old responds of relax ur going crazy sort of thing.
I dont know if you are religous or not but I am and I came apound a passage that sayes in the bible that nobody knows when the world is going to end not the angles in heaven not even Jesus christ, but only the father in heaven. after a few months it just passed and I dont even think about it any more. Nothing is going to happen. People have been predicting the end of the world for the past 1000 years and we're still here.

In recent times, the world was going to be destroyed:

Sept 9, 1999: The dates on all the military satellites would read 9999 which is the warning code for all out nuclear war and they'd cause all the missiles to launch.

Dec 31, 1999: The dreaded Y2K bug was going to wipe out humanity along with millennium madness and people running around thinking it was going to be the second coming.

Dec 31, 2000: Millennium madness again but on a smaller scale. People thought that since it didn't happen last year, and there was no year zero that *this* was the year of the second coming.

May 25th 2006: Some kook got the message that aliens were going to destroy the earth with a mega tsunami from messages he got from reading crop circles.

June 6, 2006: a lot of loonies thought that since the date was 666 (ignore the fact that there's supposed to be a zero in there) that this would be the day the antichrist would appear.

Summer 2007: Shelby Corbitt of Florida got a messge from gawd that the rapture would occur at this point. As time and the months went by there was no rapture and as of this morning nothing has happened.

You can see that this is only a small list of things that people said would occur. 2012 will be no different. The Mayan calendar would have just started a new cycle at that point.

Ok, well first of all, you've got to understand somewhat of historical happenings. think about it. for one, do you believe in the Old Testament, or any portion of the bible? If so then you have to think back to the original very first day ever in all of the creation. for one, did they have a declared or acknowledged "year" at that point? No, not from studies, I mean how could they, God did not give them all the knowledge there ever was. He gave them a choice and they had to learn on their own other than basic instincts. so anyways, you've got to realize that the "year" is something that was created many many years ago, but NOT at the beginning of time. so in other words, January 1st just so happened to be the day selected to be our New Year. for all we know it could have been anything. Could have been July 24th or something random like that. The whole idea that I am getting at is there is no possible way that the "New Year" in 2012 could have any true relevance in the end of the world, especially since the year was a bunch of made up dates in the first place. yes, there is a year and a pattern that has always happened, but honestly how long have there actually been dates. so thats what I believe; if you do not believe the New Testament is true, that is your choice, and if you do then you should note that it was preached that no one and that means NO ONE will know the time, date, hour, minute of the return of Christ; which, will be the most significant thing to ever occur in both modern culture and that of the Mayans! I don't really understand where all the fear is coming from either. The Mayans Calendar, which is not predicting the end of the world in 2012, but the start of a new era on December 21st, 2012. The year 2012 marks the end of the "Great Cycle." When it came to mathematics, time and calendars, the Maya were geniuses. Believing that time repeated itself in cycles.

Many ancient civilization had predicted apocalypse over thousands of years, from the Book of I Ching to Nostradamus, and the Native Indians to even the Holy Bible all predicted that the world will come to an end. however, we as humankind are still around today waiting for that "doomsday" to happen. All predictions are open for different interpretations, and every few years some lunatic is going to flip through some old pre-historic predictions and exaggerate it based on his/her own interpretations. Once your mind starts to persuade you into thinking that apocalypse is going to happen, you would honestly start to believe that it is really coming.

I believe it about as much as the world coming to an end during the millennium… the year 2000. Remember we were all gonna party like it was 1999? Yeah, that did not happen. The bible tells us that no person shall know the time nor the place.

At this time in late december / 2012 the sun and our earth for that matter will be right in the middle of the galaxy which is something that happens every 25,800 years. When this alignment happens many disasters will occur and the magentic poles will shift. IT IS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD, as there is no such thing as an end. With all death's come rebirths. If all 7 billion of us die, that means we will start all over again. after all we forget everything we do on a concious level anyway. We know several ice ages are going to occur before the sun's life is over and if this happens to be one, so be it! If there are no nuclear wars by the end of 2009, then i don't know what to think, but if there is.. watch out and enjoy the ride.

The calendar end in 2012, but not the world. We have calendars ending every year.
The Mayan calender is a 'map' of a cycle based on the movement of Venus and thus is quite different than the modern calendar. Venus is just back in the same spot as it was when the calendar starts.

Its suppose to be the day when the solar system rotates to be in position with the middle of the Galaxy the reason the calendar ends is because it reaches the end of the cycle much like when the moon becomes full, it starts to move the other direction to disappear again, then when it reaches that end of the spectrum it starts the process all over again, honestly I've read tons of stuff on this because it was getting me thinking as well, and the conclusion I've come up with, is its a whole lot of nothing that a lot of companies try to justify selling books etc on. Remember the big scare of 2000 that the world was going to end because all computers were going to crash.
