What is so rational about the 2012 Mayan prophecies, as compared to other previous prophecies?

It is not a prophecy….it's just the end of their calendar

There is nothing rational about ANY of these so-called "prophesies". They're ALL utter BS.

What I find amusing is the number of so-called Christians who say they believe the world will end in 2012!

Not at all embarrassed. the bible says that no-one but the Father knows when that day will be. It could be tomorrow or in several hundred years time. if it happens on the set date in 2012 which so many seem to wish to discuss these days we won't be here crowing about it anyway because the end will have come. however, if 2012 comes and goes and we are still using this site in 2013 that will be one topic of conversation which we will probably not have on here again. Yippeeeeeeee!

Maybe God sent some prophecy down to the Mayans too. Isn't it written in the bible somewhere that everyone gets the Word?

No I'm not embarrassed. They are the ones looking to other sources for prophecy rather than the Bible.
Also if they looked into what the Myans actuality believed they would see that it's not the end of the world. People watch a film and think they know it all, they should do some research into the matter before coming to a conclusion.

Also, God has had contact with all people's, for sure. He was with Ishmael, ancestor of the muslims during his youth.
In Ezekiel God charged that other nations had lived more pleasing lives than his chosen people (the Israelites) had. He was furious and had given Ezekiel a dramatic word vision of himself in His glory. This type of vision (God on throne) is associated with devine judgment.
Jesus also said God does good for the saved and the sinner. BUT the Bible states Jesus will return like a thief in the night. It's not something you can ear mark on the calander.

Here we go, another person who believes that because the mayan calendar ends in 2012 the world will end. This nonsense has nothing to do with Christianity, nobody can tell you when the world will end.

On Dec 20th 2012 there will be rioting in the streets when the people realize the world did not end and there are only four shopping days till Christmas.

There are pros and cons to free speech. One of the unfortunate cons is not so much that anyone can write any horseshit they want, but that there will always be somebody who will believe that horseshit.

For clarity sake, while you say that only "the process" starts in 2006, the work you link to clearly states that 2006 (or 2000) is the year of nuclear holocost. Not the start of a process towards nuclear holocost, but of actual nuclear holocost.

How about a wager – If no nuclear holocaust occurs by the end of September (the end of 2006 on the Hebrew calendar), in just a handful of weeks, you owe me $20, and an admission that this stuff is useless nonsense. People be honest do you really think the world will end in 2012 why or why not

The abrupt ending of the Mayan Long Count Calendar on December 21 2012 has been described as a prophecy of the end of an age and maybe the world. There is no such prophecy in the Mayan calendar pointing to 2012 as the end of the world. this idea is merely some people's interpretation; an interpretation that many do not believe. It also needs to be said that Mayan scholars themselves say this idea misrepresents Mayan history.

However, while it is quite a jump in logic and hard to prove a December 21 2012 doomsday from this calendar, is it still possible that the Mayan understanding of the universe and how it effects life on earth, still has something to teach us. Can it still help us to predict, if not to the day and year, catasrophic events yet to happen on earth?

After all, Mayan beliefs about the universe reflect similar but more detailed discoveries which modern day scientists have made as they observe the known universe today.

One similarity is the Mayan's understanding of the cyclic nature of our solar system as we move through the milky way galaxy. The Mayans speak of a dark rift or galactic plain. They say that the end of an age, which can bring about world wide catastrophes is caused by the world sitting on the what they call a dark rift. Modern scientists speak of the earth passing through this dark rift, or galactic equinox or central plain. this event refers to the cyclic and destructive gravitational influence caused by the massive black hole at the centre of our galaxy.

Some scientists believe that this is behind the increase in magnitude and frequency of earthquakes, floods etc which our world and other planets in the solar system are experiencing.

Whether or not the end result of these events will culminate on December 21 2012 is actually not the thing you should be concerned about. Why? The world will not end but, it will be a huge turning point. many lives may or may not be lost. God promised that he would not destroy the earth by water again but,by fire. It wont take too many bombs to do that. He also said,beware of false profits. There will be wars and rumors of wars. not even the angels in heaven will know when the time will be. The only thing that anyone can actually do is to be right with God before it does. There are many that prophecies of what may happen but,to look at what they have to say will only bring worry to what you have no power to change anyway. World may or may not end in 2012 but there is definitely special alignment of the planets going to happen in that year and this alignment may have much effect on so many of us. Apparently they(the mayans, i ching, even the Bible!) say that the Earth will end on or around 21st December 2012. Apparently, NASA did find a comet but they say it'll pass the Earth in 2029, not directly hit it.

No i do not think the world will in in 2012. I KNOW this because that is the day that the guy who wrote the Mayan calendar stopped writing it that day. so that is why the mayans thought the world was going to end. Then some geeky dude made it popular.

The Mayan Calendar ends in 2012. our Calender ends from time to time also, that's why we make new ones. I don't think the world will end, or at least I really hope it wont. I've still got things to do before I die!

2012 is the year in which the Mayan calendar comes to an end, and they predicted a great change, certain tribes of American Indians believed that this year would be a year of 'great purification' and the old world would disappear to herald the emergence of the next, the Chinese divining system I Ching has predicted that the world would end in 2012, and Nostradamus supposedly made references to it; allegedly the Bible and Koran have also referenced the end of the world around this time. The Maya didn't predict the end of the world or anything of the sort.

The winter solstice 2012 simple represents the end of the long count, which incidentally will mark the THIRD time since the long count began that it has reset to zero.

You have to remember that to the Maya, indeed to most ancient civilizations, time was not linear like we imagine it today but cyclical, it's not a beginning to and end but rather a continuous cycle which simply starts again at the winter solstice 2012.

The "prophesy" surrounding 2012 is a MODERN attempt to superimpose Christian or other current ideologies over ancient ones that are radically different in actuality. There's the story of a Catholic saint who went into a trance on his way to Rome. He named every pope there had been and will be. According to him, we're on our 2nd to last pope.

There's also a calendar in one of the great pyramids of Egypt that ends around 2020 or 2025, I think. I believe there is some confusion about the exact time represented on the calendar, so it's possible it could refer to 2012, as well.

You know, maybe the Mayan guy who made calendars didn't want to make them anymore? Did you ever think of that? So then they needed a reason why they quit making them and made one up, people make up reasons why they quit all the time. Then it was like a chain reaction, people started believing it and "predicting it". Sounds pretty logical no?

But both systems do not say it is the end of the world. It is the end of the known world.

I am doing an informative speech and the problem is that ther is so much information on the topic I am not sure which three points to focus on. Does anybody have any tips on the matter. What would you like to know about the prophecy?

Agreed, it's not a prophecy. I'm still hoping for the world to end soon though since it's become an embarrassment to say I'm part of the human race that's being ruled by greed and the crooked politicians. Maybe I should just get out of the U.S.a.

Im doing an article on 2012 for my high school audition for journalism to get into nsa(nashville school of arts) and i really need to know HOW they predicted and how do we know they predicted it. I know they had some calender pr something but can you please VERY VERY VERY specific? thanks tons

What is it you think they predicted? The end of the world? Apparently they couldn't even predict that their culture would disappear.
If you want to do something related to journalism, I'd either choose a different subject or get some facts about why people mistakenly believe the Mayan calendar has anything to do with anything.

i can tell u that they predicted the end of the world in 2012 by using the stars and were they are in the sky. I don't remember who we now that but i think it might be because they wrote stuff down(it think).

The Mayan calendar counts down to December 21,2012. The prophecy does NOT say that the world will end but will start a new age of enlightenment. It is unclear on how the Mayans were able to do this, however there is speculation that they were able to calculate the moon phases as well as the planet linear movement and the sun phases. On that day, all nine planets will be aligned (if you still count Pluto a planet), there will be a solar eclipse, and it is already Winter Solstice.

Their calendar is not the most accurate in the world for we will actually be using it. we use the Gregorian calendar. It was quite accurate, but still off a bit.

December 21, 2012 is simply the date that the Mayan long count calendar comes to an end. The Mayans themselves stopped using the long count calendar hundreds of years ago.

My understanding is that the Mayans understood that the Earth's position in the galaxy swayed from north to south in a complete cycle every 52,000 years. Dec 21 2012 just happens to be the very end of the cycle. The calendar does not end there, just starts all over again. How they got this knowledge is anybody's guess!

there are a ton of theories.
1. end of the world (this has like fifty subcategories such as)
A.Nuclear Holocaust
B. Plague
C. Aliens (not likely)

2.the human race starts to evolve.
2012 has been said to be the beginning of a new age in which humanity is supposed to (become enlightened and find forgotten knowledge. (this also has some subcategories but i don't feel like explaining them)

3. end of a full Universal cycle (end of world but not really)
the Mayans were really good with astronomy and they were able to map out the path of the planets for thousands of year after they were wiped out. (we would have more info on their religion if the Europeans hadn't wiped out their culture) the end of the Mayan calender could just be the end of the cycle at witch time all the planets will be in perfect alignment. (not some prophetic occurrence just simple astronomy. well….not so simple considering they were basically savages but still not something to be worked up about.

There will be no sudden 'pole shift', either geographic or magnetic. there will be no 'killer solar flares'. there is no 'Photon Belt'. These are fiction. there will be no 'galactic alignment' or 'planetary alignment' of any kind, and we will not pass through the central plane of the galaxy, and even if these events were to occur, they would not cause any problems for us.

There is no "Planet X" or Nibiru. If someone claims that this object exists, then many regulars in this forum have been asking for the RA/Dec coordinates for it. One website is offering $5,000 for these coordinates.

i am also very interested in that question also, but i have heard from many friends that the person that guessed the twin towers were going to crash got it right (even though he made like 1000 predictions) so then he predicted that the world is going to end in 2012. and aliens? hmm i dont really believe in them lmao.

I don't know if the world is coming to an end or 2012. but what i definitely know is that if we have to stop the world from coming to an end, we need to save the environment. For instance, one of the major life sustaining resources is water. without water there will be no world. Sadly, the fresh water level across various regions have dropped significantly. People cannot tell the future…. they can only convince others that they can. Why the predictions are never "good news" ?, because nobody would give them the attention they seek.

Many people throughout history have predicted the end of the world…and all of them were wrong so far…. Odds are the Myans are just as wrong as everyone else who made the same prediction.

The Mayan calendar is ending and Nostradamus said it was over so there's a chace. but not any higher a chance than any other day. Aliens? probably but we can't reach them. If there are then they are really far away. and they aren't going to get here and take you or anything. just calm down. It'll all be ok.

people who can see and have predicted the future have all said the same 2012 is the end. the swine flu is a small sample of what is coming, so get your immune system built up, or be like these others who say it cant happen here, funny it did before, no reason it cant again.

These predictions are scare tactics, conspiracy theories, and chances to make money from books and movies.

Ever since the Y2K and 6/6/6 (June 6, 2006) end of the World scenarios did not pan out, the scare mongers, conspiracy theorists, book sellers, and television executives have been touting the 2012 end of the World scenario. When 2012 does not happen either, I am sure they will think of something else.

"but of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come." (Mark 13:32-33)

Jesus told us in no uncertain terms that we were not to know when the end of the world would come but that we were always to be ready.

The early Christian Church thought that Jesus was going to return at any moment. only after a couple of centuries did the Church realize that it may be 2,000 or 4,000 or 8,000 years before Jesus returns.

The Catholic Church wisely follows Jesus' advice and teaches that each of us should live as if we will meet our maker in the next ten minutes and that we need to work to make the world a better place for our 100 X great-grandchildren.

Do not worry about the end of the world. Trust God to make sure everything happens to plan. just be ready to meet God at any time.

Some believe that the world will end based on the fact that the Mayan Long Count Calendar ends on December 21, 2012. but is this really a prediction for the end of the world? The problem with any prophecy is that until the time of the predicted event has been and gone, there is no way for sure that we can say that they will or will not come true. but there are things that we can look at for a guideline, things that we know to be true.

Here’s the story. The Mayans as a people existed for thousands of years and were already around two thousand years before Christ. in their time. they were one of the most advanced people in the world and understood abstract concepts, such as the value of zero, long before other civilizations did.

Meanwhile, they were also astronomers and had a great deal of understanding about the movement of the stars to the point that they were able to predict the positions of stars thousands of years in advance. Not only that, but they developed a calendar system based upon the movement of the stars that would go on to regulate the way that they ran their lives. They had accurately measured the length of the year by the sun, to a far higher degree than any European civilization, and had made hugely precise observations of the heavens.

You see, they were mathematical geniuses who were able to perform calculations into the millions, calculations that few even today could perform. All this was without computer support.

Think about it. All of this was done without the special instrumentation that we have today. Clearly, they had knowledge and experience of the stars that no one else had at that time. Though no one can say for sure that the prophecy will prove to be correct until the time comes around, you can’t deny that they had incredible knowledge at a time that others lacked it.

Surely then, isn’t it possible that they knew other things that we don’t know? Though there will be no way to be sure in advance that they are right, it would seem that this is a people that we should be taking notice of.
