No. It is not true. the world has existed for four billion years. Is it reasonable to expect that it will come to an end in less than four years? And all because of a Mayan calendar? use some common sense, rather than freaking out.

The most interesting astronomical events in 2012 will be an annular eclipse of the Sun on 2012 may 20, a total eclipse of the Sun on 2012 Nov 13, and a transit of the planet Venus across the face of the Sun on 2012 Jun 06.

Scientists don't expect anything out of the ordinary to happen in the year 2012, or specifically on the date December 21, except for the solstice, which happens every year.

None of the "predicted" happenings for 2012 hold up under close scrutiny. "Planet X" and "Nibiru" simply don't exist. the Mayan calendar ends a cycle, but there were no predictions of the end of the world. the Sun doesn't line up with the galactic centre; it's 6 degrees off. no asteroids or comets are actually predicted to hit Earth.

All of this stuff was put together by crackpots in order to promote their books and TV shows, and shamelessly promoted by the History Channel. Don't take any of it seriously!

What science part? there is nothing scientific about anything that you have quoted.

A. If someone in the future dug up this years calander they might say that we predicted the end of the world on 1 Jan 2010 becuase our calendar ran out on 31 Dec 2009!

B. the sun has an 11 year cycle we've known this for over a century.

C. Religions – yes very scientific….

D. no geologist has or can predict this. It makes good tabloid news/interest.

People who want to be noticed say stuff that will get them noticed. They will mix some truth in with their lies and spin a great yarn – but it's just fiction.

there is absolutely no scientific evidence supporting the claim that there could be a geomagnetic reversal around the time of December 21st, 2012.
the effects of such a reversal have been totally over-hyped.

we'll most likely experience aurorae at all latitudes whilst the dipolar magnetic field settles down to its new, reversed state, and there might be a small increase in energetic particles from space

The Mayan Long Count calendar rolls over to a new cycle on 21st December 2012. the Mayans predicted nothing about any disaster. And the lunar cycle is 29.53059 days not 329 53059 days. That's how I know this is a cut-and-paste job from people who don't know what they're talking about.
Solar activity reaches a peak in 2012 as it does every 11 years. the next peak is expected to be less active than the last in 2001.
All these 'ancient prophesies' have been faked. If you can find a reference to any of them dating back before 1995, you will be the first to do so.
No geologists predict that the Yellowstone volcano will erupt in 2012. Where are their published findings on the subject?
The last magnetic pole shift was 780,000 years ago. the next one might occur in 1,000 years or 10,000 years. these events take thousands of years to complete. To pretend it will all take place in 2012 is ridiculous.

Huge amounts of codswallop in all those claims.

There are hoaxers out there trying to scare people about the world ending, and they use pseudo-science and bad history to try to persuade people of this. Those who actually understand science realise it's complete nonsense, as these claims are either completely incorrect or so distorted as to be completely invalid.

The Maya calendar doesn't end, it's just one cycle that does. However, that will make no difference to anything, as calendars can't actually change nature. Just like our last millennium end didn't change anything. It's just a way of counting days, not of predicting anything. Same with Hindu and other 'cultural' predictions.

Solar activity will indeed reach its peak in 2012, just as it did in 2001 and every 11 years before. rather than being a cause for doom, it's a good time to watch out for beautiful aurorae (northern/southern lights) in the night sky. such solar activity is perfectly normal, and no more likely to destroy us than at any other time in mankind's history.

Yellowstone is indeed likely to erupt at some point, but that could be any time in the next umpteen thousand years. no vulcanologists are saying it's likely in 2012.

It's a similar story with all the other reasons they're giving, such as intruding planets, galactic alignments, pole switches, etc. This is just like medieval people being scared of shadows, red sunsets, and hook-nosed women that wear a lot of black, attributing all sorts of scary hocus-pocus to things they don't understand.

There aren't any scientists who are worried in the slightest about the 'events' of 2012, beyond the normal stuff that gives them concern all the time.

So, we're no more likely to meet our doom in 2012 as 2000012 or next week!

Venusaur is *absolutely* incorrect. there isn't a real scientist IN THE WORLD who predicts this. as some have told you, we will have a solar maximum somewhere around 2012 or 2013 and the consensus is that it is NOT expected to be particularly bad.

Let me add to what others have said by pointing out that this whole myth is strengthened by the claims that something for 2012 was predicted by several of these ancient sources. Guess what. Yep, you guessed it. Those claims are just as bogus as the predictions themselves. NOBODY before the 1970s ever predicted anything for 2012 or any time near it. This was started by an acid-head named Terence McKenna in the 70s and has been embellished ever since by people looking for a buck in the popular media.

The Mayan calendar is *round*. It goes in cycles. 2012 is the end of one of their cycles just like Dec. 31, 2000 was the end of one of ours. so what?

Relax, and pass some of this on to your friends who have had the misfortune of reading certain Internet sites or watching the History Channel.

we will evolve spiritually, entering a new age of enlightenment. all the prophetic events in the bible are coming true. the sun will eclipse before the end date Dec 21, 2012. the bible said the sun will be darkened and the moon will not be seen. And we will learn of the end date during the end of times, which is now.

Don't you think this very pole shift can lift some auras or souls into higher vibrations, while some auras that are more 'sinned' do not gain this change. Sounds like ascension.

Do some research, a lot of other Indians believe that the world will end.

One pope (forgot whihc) foretold a prphecy that the world will end (Jesus will come) when the 112 or 111th (forgot) pope dies. the current pope is one away. And he's pretty old.
