Suspense fiction books are in many respects the perfect choice for a book lover. Let\’s face it: If you live out there in an average house in the average suburb, not much ever happens in your life. You go to work every day, come home, watch TV, eat, sleep, then go back to work. And Saturdays you work in the garden and watch the sports channel.

Reading a captivating suspense story takes you right out of the humdrum of your daily existence to a world of high speed cars, lovely ladies and debonair heroes. It transfers you to an imaginary reality where the future of our world is always hanging in the balance and where betrayal and excitement waits around every corner.

One of the all-time favorites in this genre is the spy story. Now we can\’t all be James Bonds, but it certainly does no harm to dream. The appeal of many of these stories partly lies in the exotic locations where the action takes place. You might never have traveled in your life, but through the eyes of your hero you can get to know far-off places like Lima or Shanghai, Honolulu or Cairo.

Another all-time favorite is the detective story. Although the action here is not at the same frenetic speed as in a spy story, the suspense could be even more intense. Once the scene has been set and the characters are all together somewhere in a remote location, the murder will happen. Of course every murder needs a detective: an eccentric chap with an affinity for beautiful women will do just fine. When it becomes known that the butler is a prime suspect, the table is set for a suspenseful time ahead…

For those of us with strong hearts there\’s of course that very special type of suspense story, the thriller. Here anything goes. These stories abound with ghostly old houses, dark moors and visits from the other side. Beware: The axe murderers and haunted spirits found in many of these books are enough to give anyone sleepless nights, regardless of their age.

The alien invader is another niche in the suspense story genre. In these books creatures from outer space will visit earth with only one intention: to destroy our civilization and steal our natural resources. To make things really interesting, they very often look exactly like us, making it hard to know who is your friend and who is your enemy. As you can well imagine, this provides for many suspenseful moments.

Suspense fiction books have been around for quite a long time. And they\’ve come to stay. The reason probably is that they fulfill a very real need for many of us: the need to experience excitement, fear and an adrenalin rush without having to leave the safety of our armchairs.
