A library full of books, which has shelves lined up to the ceiling of the room, is a heaven for any book-lover. His eyes can’t stop hovering, seeking and inspecting the names and authors of the books around him. For some, the library is a status symbol, but for most people who don’t own one, it is a source of knowledge, fun and enjoyment. What is the future of the library?

It is wrong to say that the library has no future, because reading will always be a hobby, and plenty of people still love to hold a book in the hand or read by clicking away on the mouse. But the future library will definitely look different, the book collections will be more specific and only a small interested group of people will be making use of the physical library. It is the digital library that is fast gaining ground.

The libraries in schools need to be made so attractive for the students that they will enjoy spending their time there. Make them into E-libraries, and have it constructed by the school architect. If it has some specially “value-added” qualities, it is natural that students would like to go there to get their information and reading material. It doesn’t matter whether a library is digital or not, it has to cater to the young generation of today who are more familiar with the net than books.

Not only in schools, but also in other educational institutions the digital library should be a good mixture of actual books as well as the IT program. The job of the librarian is to include as many programs as possible, so that access to the virtual and digital world is easy for students. People are not going to stop reading; just the format of presentation will undergo a change.

The internet has naturally taken away a huge chunk of library goers, who would linger for hours in libraries, jotting down notes from reference books, looking into films, DVDs, all of which can be conveniently done from one place and perhaps with better results, because of the technology and the up-to-date material available.

All books in a library need to be looked after and maintenance cost is quite high. It is the job of the librarian to get a good collection for the library with the help of the historian and the archivist, who can categorize the books. Many middle-aged people and even some young people find it much more enjoyable to read a book, holding it in the hand, than reading it on a screen. If libraries can be funded by the state, it is a good idea to maintain a bit of the old tradition of having a library full of books supervised by a qualified librarian.

Besides the digital library for books, the CD and the DVD libraries are quite popular. Young people tend to download movies and music, but more than often they are violating some rules, just by saving some money from a library membership.

The library will become a place of activity, where students will be interacting with each other and the digital world to learn and get new information. This is definitely a change from the traditional library where it was peaceful and quiet. But learning is taking a new turn, so why shouldn’t the library continue to be a centre of learning, no matter what the methods may be.
